A few weeks ago my husband and I bought our son his very first train set. He doesn't know it yet, but he'll be getting it for his first Christmas and we hope to run it under the tree for years to come.

When I was asked if I wanted to join forces with my friend and co-worker Don Morgan from the Hawk's sister radio station for a new feature called "Trip on a Tank," I was all over it with one condition- I had to be able to take my son so he can experience new adventures with me.

Located just over an hour from Binghamton, Steamtown National Historic Site is a railroad museum and heritage railroad located in downtown Scranton and is at the site of the former Scranton yards of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.

Steamtown is a fantastic place to explore with plenty of things for people of all ages to do. There are play areas for little kids and museum exhibits everyone will enjoy. In addition to trains that you can walk on and explore, there are guided tours of the roundhouse maintenance areas and even a theater with a cute short film. If you'd like to spend a little extra, you can buy a ticket to take a 30 minute train ride.

The Steamtown facilities are absolutely beautiful and it's evident that the staff is  passionate about the mission of preserving a piece of American history.

Steamtown is open daily from 9am-5pm with the exception of winter when the hours are 9am-4pm.  Entrance fees are subject to change so be sure to check ahead of time, but they includes access to the grounds, museum complex and scheduled tours. An additional fee is required for train rides.
