I can't believe the number of people that have never been on a train.  It's not like the US is the passenger train mecca and not having high-speed rail service has a lot to do with it.  Let's face it, America would rather save time by driving or flying. If riding the rails is on your bucket list of things to do, a trip to nearby Steam Town USA by the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railroad Historical Society, may be well worth your time this fall or early winter.

Riding one of those historic diesel locomotives on one of their themed weekends, may just be what your family needs about now.  Just bring your camera phone because there will be many memories you will want to remember and some great picture-taking opportunities.  And best of all, you won't have to drive forever to hop on the train; 90 or so minutes, you are there.

Here are some upcoming train rides you should consider:

  • Sunday October 23 - Enjoy a musical Sunday visit with live guitar music and light refreshments. The restored depot preserves aspects of life in the early days of the Poconos. A show of historic autos is also part of the train visit, weather-permitting.  Departs from Cresco, PA at 11:30 am and returns at 4:00 pm.
  • Saturday October 29 - Step back to the Roaring 20s at the historic Gouldsboro train station. Food, drink, books and souvenirs are available. Departs at 11:00 a.m. and returns at 3:00 p.m.
  • Saturday October 29th and Sunday October 30 - Halloween Special.  Celebrate the spooky season at Steamtown NHS with a special Halloween train ride on the "Roundhouse of Terror." Call 570-344-3841, Tuesdays – Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturdays, 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. (closed Sundays and Mondays)
