A big charity golf tournament is back in the Southern Tier and now honors the memory of a sports great with an even bigger heart while raising money for local children’s charities.

The Jim Mudcat Grant Legacy All Star Golf Tournament is raising money for the Boys and Girls Club, Catholic Charities, The Broome County Urban League, CHOW and veterans groups and has drawn legendary names like Al Downing Junior and former Yankees great C.C Sabathia.

Other guest celebrities on hand September 2 were Cy Young Award winner Vern Law, two-time World Series Champion George Foster, Miracle Mets player Art Shamsky and Super Bowl Champions Arthur Jones and Johnny Roland among others.

The tournament was held at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin.

Jim "Mudcat" Grant was the founder of the Black Aces, a group of Black major league baseball pitchers with 20 wins in a single season but had a special place in his heart for the Southern Tier, starting the All Star Golf Tournament 20 years ago.  The event has raised thousands of dollars for the local charities with an emphasis on children as well as services for veterans over the past two decades.
