Man Found Dead After “Suspicious” House Fire in Cortland County
Authorities say a man's body was discovered after fire damaged a residence in a small town in Cortland County.
According to New York State Police, the man has been identified as 65-year-old Gary Stensland. He lived in the home on Route 13 in the town of Cuyler where the blaze occurred.
The fire was reported around 10 a.m. Monday. The scene is located near Crains Mills Road, northeast of the city of Cortland.
The Cuyler and Truxton fire departments initially responded to the call. Firefighters from other departments in Cortland and Madison counties assisted.
State police described the blaze as "suspicious" but did not elaborate. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation was being assisted by the Forensic Identification Unit and state fire investigators.
Police said the cause of the fire and the cause of Stensland's death were under investigation.
