Marriage May Be Helping New York Couples Stay Healthy
Marriage may affect more than a person’s relationship status. A new survey found that spouses often encourage each other to visit the doctor and make healthier choices. According to the survey, 63% of married New Yorkers have visited a doctor, dentist, therapist, or other health professionals because their spouse encouraged them to go.
Showing Concern Can Strengthen a Marriage
In New York, almost 70% of those surveyed said their spouse’s interest in their health had a positive effect on their relationship. That number was higher than the national average of 59%. It suggests that many couples appreciate knowing their spouse cares about their health.
Marriage Can Offer Emotional Support
The survey found that 37% of married New Yorkers feel more emotionally supported because of their marriage. Across the country, 32% said the same. 23% of New Yorkers said marriage has encouraged them to take preventive healthcare more seriously. This includes getting regular checkups or health screenings before a problem develops.
Finding Time for Yourself Can Be Difficult
Marriage may encourage healthy choices, but it can also make it harder to focus on personal needs. More than half of married New Yorkers, 56%, said marriage has reduced the time they have for their own health. The national average was a little lower at 54%. The results show the balance many married people face. They want to care for their spouse, but they need to make time to care for themselves.

How the Survey Was Conducted
The survey included 500 married or legally partnered adults in the United States and another 500 in Australia. Those surveyed were between the ages of 18 and 65. The research was conducted from January 8 through January 12, 2026.
