The latest census results are out and now we know if the population of New York is rising or falling. It feels like it's declining but that's another story for another day. The Census Bureau uses data on births, deaths, and other factors to estimate the population change since the last census in 2010.

Did you know that  New York State has a local government 2020 Census Interactive Dashboard? You can click to see how your favorite city, town, or village is doing. I clicked on the Town of Vestal and saw that the population rose by 4.5 % since 2010.

I clicked on the Town of Windsor and saw that the population has declined by 7.5% since 2010. I live in the Town of Chenango, so I decided to see if the population is going up or down. I saw that it's declined by 2.6% since 2010. I hope it wasn't something that I said.

One thing to keep in mind is that the 2020 census measured the population at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, so the numbers may have changed significantly in the last two years.

For example, New York City is showing that the population rose by 7.7% from 2010 to 2020. Many businesses and residents have fled the Big Apple since the pandemic began so it could be headed in a different direction now.

I like that this map also helps me find where other municipalities are located. Check it out for yourself and see how your favorite New York location did in the last census. Take a look below to see how our local counties are growing/shrinking. A big shoutout to Michael Symons at our New Jersey sister station who did something similar for his neck of the woods!
