Old-Fashioned Health Tips That Can Actually Hurt You
Some things that you might have always been told about your health may not be as great for you as you may have been led to believe. Bustle, and clinical professor Dr. Robert Kravetz, MD, explains that there are some old-fashioned pieces of advice about your health that might be more harmful to you than healthful.
- Carrots help with your vision because if the vitamin A that is in carrots, and while that is absolutely true, too much vitamin A can be harmful to your body and has been known to lead to osteoporosis where the bones become weaker and more prone to breaking.
- Stretching before you exercise is probably something you've always been told, but unless you actually need your flexibility in the exercise that you're about to do (yoga, dance, etc.) then you don't need to stretch beforehand, and it might actually benefit you more to focus on other warm-up activities instead of stretching (like running in place to get your heart rate up).
- Applying heat to an injury has always been what you're told if you pulled a muscle of any kind, however after an injury, inflammation is likely to follow and applying heat to an already inflamed part of your body might actually increase the inflammation and further the pain and stiffness that you are already feeling.
Your parents and grandparents always have your best interests in mind, however they may not know everything when it comes to your health. It's best to pay attention to your body and listen to it when something changes.
