One in Four New York Seniors Living Alone Haven’t Had Contact This Winter
If you live in New York State, winter probably means staying in more and checking on neighbors when you can. But a new study suggests that older New Yorkers may be going weeks without anyone checking in at all.
The Study Shows A Troubling Number
A survey of 3,025 seniors age 65 and older who live alone were asked one question. Has anyone checked on you since January 1st? Over 25 percent said no. That is around 24,000 seniors across New York who went an entire month without contact. No conversation, no visit, and sometimes not even a quick call.
Winter Makes Isolation Worse
Cold weather and shorter days can keep people inside more. In the survey, almost 75 percent of seniors living alone said winter is when loneliness is the worst. Everyday things like icy sidewalks or long drives can stop visits from happening.

A large number of those surveyed said loneliness feels like being invisible. Almost 70 percent report feeling forgotten during the winter months. That feeling can build and make it harder for someone to reach out.
Even Those With Company Can Feel Alone
Loneliness is not limited to people who live alone. About 65 percent of seniors who live with a partner said they still feel lonely sometimes. Being near someone physically does not always mean emotional connection.
Support Systems Are Not Always There
Nearly 3 in 10 seniors living alone said they do not have anyone they feel comfortable talking to during tough times. More than half feel that loneliness is already affecting their health, mentally and physically.
What This Means For Communities Like Yours
If you live in New York, chances are there is an older neighbor, relative, or family friend nearby who could use a simple check in. A short visit, text, or call may not seem like much, but it can make a real difference.
Loneliness is not always obvious. Sometimes the people who seem fine are the ones who have not heard from anyone in a while. A small effort on your part can help someone feel alive again. To see how other states rank when it comes to loneliness for seniors living alone, go here.
