Make A Difference & Support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

As  mentioned in my last article, I am part of the Townsquare Binghamton family, and along with being the Brand Manager for our sister radio station 99.1 The Whale, I am also the Brand Manager for 98.1 The Hawk.

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of visiting the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital  in Memphis, Tennessee. I thought I knew enough about the campus, but my visit opened my eyes to so much more.

As my tour progressed throughout the hospital, each guide explained what each area was for and how it makes the experience for a St. Jude patient as comfortable as possible.

I soaked in all that information and stories, but what really hit home for me, was each time a parent or a set of parents walked by me pulling a red wagon with a child in it. A St. Jude child. I did not see any child look sad or afraid. I saw hope and courage.

As an adult, I don't know if I could be as strong was those kids are. That is a strong testament to the staff at St Jude Children's Research Hospital to make sure every child feels comfortable, safe and that their life is precious.

Some quick facts I learned during my visit:

• Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% in 1962 to 80% today.

• St. Jude freely shares the discoveries it makes, which means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

• Thanks to St. Jude supporters, kids can still be kids.

• St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and from around the world.
• Go up to the Danny Thomas bust in the lobby of St. Jude and rub his nose for good luck. I did.

My visit was filled with all sorts of great stories and lots of emotions. The one message that St. Jude make very clear and resonates with me more than anything else, is this:

St. Jude families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food.

That is such a strong commitment and to the point. It was Danny Thomas' vision, and it will always be carried out as long as wonderful people like you continue to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
