Getting older does not mean slowing down on taking care of yourself. September is Healthy Aging Month, a reminder for adults to stay active, focus on their health, and keep up with important medical screenings.

Why Cancer Screenings Matter

Cancer screenings can sometimes find cancer before a person feels sick or notices symptoms. Finding cancer early can give doctors more treatment options and may lead to better outcomes.

Still, many people put off screenings because they do not have health insurance, cannot afford the cost, or have trouble getting medical care. The Cancer Services Program of the Southern Tier is working to help remove those worries.

Free Screenings for Eligible Adults

The program offers free breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screenings for eligible people ages 40 and older. The goal is to make sure cost or a lack of insurance does not stop someone from getting the preventive care they need.

“Healthy aging means taking steps today that can help protect your health in the future,” said Kiran Sharma, Outreach Coordinator. “Cancer screening is an important part of preventive care, and we want residents to know that cost or lack of insurance does not have to be a barrier to getting screened.”

Help Is Available After a Screening

The Cancer Services Program can also help if a screening shows something that needs a closer look. It covers the cost of needed follow up testing for eligible patients with an abnormal result.

If cancer is diagnosed, eligible individuals may also get help enrolling in the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program. That program can help cover the cost of cancer treatment. To learn more or see if you qualify for free services, call the Cancer Services Program of the Southern Tier at 607 778 3900.
