If you remember purchasing ground beef and popping it into your freezer in the last few months, you might want to double-check to make sure that it isn't part of a high-class national recall involving 120,872 pounds of ground beef some of which was distributed to local Weis grocery stores.

The United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Inspection Service has announced a recall involving ground beef from the company Lakeside Refrigerated services due to the beef possibly being contaminated with E.coli O103.

The ground beef as part of the recall was produced between February 1, 2022, and April 8, 2022, and was sold at stores all around the United States, including in stores right here in the Southern Tier.

The ground beef was sold under brand names; Thomas Farms, Nature's Reserve, Marketside Butchers, Tajima, Weis, and Seg. If you look at your package of meat and inside the USDA mark of inspection see the establishment number “EST. 46841,” your beef is part of the recall.

While there have been no illnesses reported, people can get sick between two and eight days after consuming food containing E. coli O103 (however, most people get sick somewhere between three and four days after consumption).  People who become sick from eating food containing E. coli O103 generally experience develop diarrhea (oftentimes the diarrhea is bloody) and vomiting. Most people recover within a week but for some people, the illness can become quite severe.
