Covid-19 infection rates have improved enough for state officials to remove Broome County's "yellow zone" designation.

Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement Wednesday afternoon. The change occurred six weeks after the rising number of cases prompted the designation for a portion of western Broome.

County Executive Jason Garnar thanked residents for "doing what we needed to do to reduce the spread of the virus."

In a tweet, Garnar said "we can't let down our guard now." He noted new cases are being detected linked to Halloween celebrations. He expressed concerns because "the holidays are coming up." He urged residents to "be smart and stay safe."

Broome County was reporting 514 active Covid-19 cases as of Wednesday afternoon. At least 112 deaths in the county have been attributed to the coronavirus.
