Broome County Parks 2026 Opening Guide: Best Times to Beat the Rain This Holiday Weekend
The sound of kids splashing at Nathaniel Cole Park, the smell of charcoal drifting through the trees at Greenwood, and kayaks cutting across Dorchester Lake under a bright summer sky. For families across the Southern Tier, Memorial Day weekend is our official green light for summer.
Broome County's parks are officially open for the 2026 season with 100% free admission and parking. However, a messy holiday weather system is moving across New York's Southern Tier. If you want to get on the water or fire up the grill without getting soaked, your weekend strategy is going to require checking the radar.
Operating Hours and Free Swimming Beach Access
While the walking trails stay open year-round, Memorial Day weekend marks the official return of lifeguards, rentals, and campgrounds. Starting today and running through Labor Day, all county parks will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. until dusk. Lifeguard supervision and swimming beaches will be operational from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily, giving families plenty of time to cool off without worrying about entrance fees draining their wallets before the fun even starts.
Boat Rental Rates, Hours, and Regulations
If you’ve been itching to get back on the water after a long winter, boat rentals are stocked and ready.
Kayaks, paddle boats, rowboats, and canoes will be available daily from 11:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., with the last rental heading out at 6:30 p.m.
Standard paddle boat and kayak rentals cost $10 per hour and require a refundable $20 deposit, while rowboats and canoes are an affordable $8 per hour.
Senior citizens aged 60 and older, as well as local veterans, qualify for a discounted rate of $3 per hour for rowboat and canoe rentals.
Dorchester and Nathaniel Cole Boating Restrictions
If you’re looking for stand-up paddleboards or sailboats, those are exclusive to Dorchester Park this season, with sailboats available for a $30 flat daily rate.
Additionally, while private boat launches are allowed for those bringing their own watercraft to Dorchester Park or Grippen Park, please note that no private watercraft are allowed on Nathaniel Cole Lake at any time.
For those looking to extend the holiday overnight, camping is also back for the season at Greenwood Park for $30 per night, and large park pavilions across the county can be rented for family gatherings at $100 for weekends and holidays.
Saturday and Sunday Southern Tier Weather Forecast
The weather is delivering a classic mixed-bag Upstate weekend to kick things off.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, Saturday and Sunday are shaping up to be pretty soggy across the Southern Tier. Forecasts call for cool temperatures struggling in the 50s and low 60s, steady rain, and wind gusts up to 30 mph.
While the parks will remain open, beach swimming will be temporarily suspended if lifeguards spot lightning or hear thunder.
If you're camping at Greenwood or mandatory family time dictates an outdoor picnic, you will want to keep the rain jackets close by and aim for the late afternoon hours when the steady rain is expected to transition into scattered showers.
Memorial Day Monday Outlook and Best Times to Visit
Fortunately, Memorial Day Monday is looking like the brightest spot of the entire holiday weekend.
Morning clouds are expected to clear out for a partly sunny afternoon, sending temperatures climbing into the upper 70s with calm west winds. This afternoon clearing trend will give families a much better shot at finally getting outside without dodging steady rain.
Monday will be the prime day to fire up the charcoal grills, hit the playgrounds at Otsiningo Park, rent a kayak, or let the kids burn off some energy after being stuck indoors for most of the weekend.
Expect heavy traffic at Dorchester and Cole parks between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. as everyone rushes outside at once.

Welcoming the Southern Tier Summer Season
Around here, summer rarely arrives perfectly on cue. It usually inches its way in through damp hoodies, muddy campsites, and weather forecasts that change every six minutes. Still, seeing the lifeguard chairs back up and the kayak racks full is a comforting reminder that the best days of the year are finally ahead. Rain or shine, summer is knocking in Broome County.
