Representative Anthony Brindisi says banning the sale of flavored milk in New York City schools could hurt kids, as well as upstate New York dairy farmers.

Brindisi has sent a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio urging him to continue offering children the choice of flavored milk "each and every day in New York City schools."

The 22nd District congressman said research shows kids wind up getting fewer nutrients if flavored milks are banned.

According to Brindisi, studies indicate more than two-thirds of the milk served in schools is flavored.

The congressman said reducing the availability of flavored milk in New York City schools could threaten upstate agricultural jobs.

Brindisi's letter to de Blasio was signed by Representative Antonio Delgado and four other members of Congress.

Those who support banning flavored milk sales in schools have expressed concern about the amount of sugar the beverages contain.

Although New York City school officials are said to be considering a ban, no final decision has been made.
