Is there a simple magic pill that can help save your life if you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol?  Magic -- no.  Something that may help -- yes.  It's a low dose (81 mg) aspirin.

Study after study, including one just published by Reuters Health, says "Adults aged 50 to 59 who have at least a 10 percent risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next decade can benefit the most from taking 81 milligrams of aspirin a day."  The new guidelines go on to say that a daily low-dose aspirin "may also help protect against colorectal cancer in people who are taking it to prevent heart attacks and strokes."

People in their 60's should stay away from aspirin as it could cause bleeding in older adults.

So what does this mean for those you love living with you or near you?  Urge them to purchase low dose aspirin and it doesn't have to be the brand name at all. The store brand works just as well.

The next time I am shopping at my favorite Binghamton pharmacy, I will definitely pick up some low dose aspirin.
