I was talking with a friend and fellow mom who has years of experience working in a pediatric office about my concern regarding my son's recently developed stomach issues when he consumes dairy.

My friend recommended that we try fennel water, a little trick that she said she's shared with parents and used for years for both herself and her son. Intrigued, I asked her where I could buy fennel water and she laughed and told me to look in my pantry and see if I had any fennel seeds. I did, and she told me that all I needed was a big pot, some water, and the fennel seeds that I'd found.

According to Healthline, fennel is a good source of fiber and also acts as an anti-inflammatory and as an antimicrobial, which means that it can help get rid of bacteria in your belly. Medical News Today reports that fennel is also great for heart health, blood pressure, metabolism, and that it can also aid in fighting back against some types of cancer.

Before you start making fennel water by the gallon, let me remind you that I am not a medical professional, nor do I claim to be one. If you have any questions about fennel or fennel water, you should always reach out to your doctor first. If your doctor tells you that it's safe for you to consume, save by making your own fennel water. Sure, you can buy it at just about any health store, but you'll be amazed at how much you'll save by making it yourself.

To make fennel water, fill a large pot with water and dump in 50-100 fennel seeds depending on how much flavor you want. We love the taste of black licorice, so I made our water a bit more potent than most people would. Bring the pot to a rolling boil on the stop then turn off the burner and place a lid on the pot to allow the fennel to steep for about 10 minutes. Once steeped, strain out the seeds (or leave them in and drink them- it won't hurt you) and either drink the water like you would a warm cup of tea, or allow to cool and then chill in your refrigerator. Drinking it cool is the way that we like it. Cool, refreshing, and tasty!
