U.S. Senator Kirstin Gillibrand of New York is part of a bi-partisan group in Washington proposing legislation to allow sexual assault and harassment survivors to more easily seek damages from employers.

The group is proposing changes to laws that had been prevented legal action through forced arbitration clauses that had been allowed to be buried deep in small print in employment agreements.

The Democrat was joined in Washington Jully 14 by South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham and others to announce the bill’s introduction.

Gillibrand says ending the Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault & Sexual Harassment Act would give survivors their day in court and end institutional protections for harassers.

Senator Graham says the current law allows many employment contracts to require binding arbitration no mater what type of grievance is involved.
