What New Yorkers Believe About Pest Control
When warmer weather arrives in New York State, so do the pests. Ants start showing up in kitchens, mosquitoes buzz around backyards, and mice seem to find their way indoors.

Many homeowners try to deal with these problems on their own, using tips they’ve heard from friends, family, or the internet. But a new survey shows that a lot of what people believe about pest control might not actually be true.
Many Americans Feel Unsure About Handling Pests
In a survey of more than 1,000 Americans, researchers found that most people have tried to handle pest problems themselves. 97% said they’ve tried some kind of DIY pest control method at home. But only 22% said they feel confident that they actually know how to deal with pests the right way.
Many People Believe Pest Control Myths
The survey also found that some common pest beliefs are based on myths. For example: 52% of people think eco-friendly pest control doesn’t work as well as other methods. Over 60% believe rats carry the most diseases. 43% think the health risks from rodents are only somewhat serious.
Most People Use the Internet for Pest Advice
One reason for the confusion may be where people get their information. According to the survey, only 10% of Americans turn to pest control professionals for advice. Most people say they learn about pest control through YouTube videos, online forums, or tips from family and friends.
The Deadliest Pest Might Surprise You
The survey also tested people’s knowledge about which pests are the most dangerous. Only 17% of people correctly identified mosquitoes as the deadliest pest. Even though mosquitoes are small, they are responsible for spreading diseases around the world.
Why This Matters for New York Homes
For homeowners across New York State, pests become more common as temperatures rise in the spring and summer. The survey shows that while many people try to handle pest problems on their own, misinformation can sometimes make those problems harder to solve. Knowing the facts about pests and how they behave can help homeowners spot problems early and deal with them more effectively.
