New York State Reminds Residents About Free Tax Filing Help
If you live in New York State and still need to file your taxes, the state says there is still time and there are free tools that may help make the process easier. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance says 2025 tax returns are due by April 15th, 2026.
The State Wants People to File Early if They Can
New York tax officials say taxpayers can use the state’s filing resources to prepare and submit returns online. The department says people who e file and choose direct deposit often get refunds faster and miss problems tied to paper returns and mailed checks.
What You Need Before You Start
Before filing, New York State says residents should get the basic information they will need. That includes Social Security numbers, birth dates, W 2 forms, certain 1099 forms, banking information for direct deposit, last year’s federal return or prior year federal adjusted gross income, and any tax credit or health coverage documents that may apply.

Free Filing May Be Available for Many New Yorkers
The state says many residents may qualify for free filing options through its website. The Tax Department helps taxpayers to Free File and other e file choices through the state filing resource center. The department also says taxpayers with 2025 federal adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less may qualify for Free File software.
Some New Yorkers Can Get Extra Help
New York also offers free filing assistance for some residents. The state’s Taxpayer Assistance Program can help taxpayers prepare and electronically file basic federal and state returns. The filing resource center also points people to Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, and MilTax for military families.
You Can Also Track Your Refund Online
After a return is filed, New York taxpayers can check the status of their refund through the Tax Department’s online refund tracker. For New York residents who have been putting off tax season, here is their reminder. The April 15, 2026 deadline is getting closer, but free filing tools and online help are available now.
