Major Bridge Closures Coming to Kirkwood This Summer
If you drive through Kirkwood regularly, especially along County Route 20, heads up because a major bridge project is about to affect traffic in a big way.
Broome County says rehabilitation work on three county-owned bridges along CR 20 is set to begin April 1, 2026, and the project is expected to continue into the fall.
Which Bridges Are Involved
According to the Broome County Department of Public Works, the work will involve three separate bridges in Kirkwood. Those include the CR 20 bridge over the Susquehanna River and Norfolk Southern Railroad, the CR 20 bridge over the NYS&W Railroad, and the CR 20 bridge over Main Street in Kirkwood.

Expect Intermittent Lane Closures Starting April 1
The first phase of the project will bring intermittent single-lane closures starting April 1 and continuing through June 1. Broome County says drivers should also expect intermittent lane closures again after September 1, lasting until the project is finished sometime in the fall.
So if this is part of your normal routine, it may be a good idea to build in a little extra time now before the bigger disruption begins.
Bridges Fully Shut Down June Through September
The biggest traffic impact will come during the summer.
County officials say the bridges will be completely closed to traffic from June 1 through September 1, with detours in place during that stretch. That means anyone who uses that route for work, school, errands, or deliveries will want to start thinking ahead.

County Urges Community To Prepare Now
Broome County is encouraging businesses, schools, and municipalities to plan accordingly as construction gets underway. That is probably good advice for everyday drivers, too. If you live in Kirkwood or travel through there often, this is one of those projects you will want on your radar before summer hits.
