New York Cracks the Top 10 for Minority-Owned Businesses
Here’s something that New Yorkers should know: We’re officially one of the top states in the country for minority-owned businesses. A new report from Baldwin Digital says New York ranks tenth overall, with about 20.5 minority-owned businesses for every 1,000 non-white residents.
Over 100,000 Minority Owned Businesses in the Empire State
New York is home to more than 109,000 minority-owned businesses and more than 72,000 of them are Asian owned. Black owned businesses make up almost 14,000 of that total too. So if you’ve grabbed dinner from a local restaurant, gotten your car fixed, or shopped small lately, you have probably supported one.
Wyoming Took the Top Spot
Wyoming came out on top with over 34 minority owned businesses per 1,000 minority residents with Florida and California following close behind. While New York didn’t snag the top spot, it was in the top 10 which is pretty impressive.

What It Means for New Yorkers
This shows how driven and creative people in New York really are. From Buffalo to Binghamton and everywhere in between, minority-owned businesses are part of what makes our towns and cities so unique.
We’ve Got Room to Climb
Being tenth is great, but there’s always room to move up. Other states are finding ways to boost support for minority owners, and the Empire State can too. More resources, and community backing can help push more local businesses into the spotlight.
Keep Supporting Local
