How Broome County Residents Can Get a Free Home Safety Check

You want your home to be a safe, comfortable place for your family. But hidden dangers, such as poor air quality, lead risks, or fire and tripping hazards, can put your health at risk without you even realizing it.

The good news? You don’t have to handle these home safety issues alone. Help is available. It’s completely free for Broome County families.

The Broome County Health Department invites you to join the Healthy Neighborhoods Program. This free service, funded by the New York State Department of Health, sends trained health professionals right to your door to help you create a safer, healthier living space for you and your loved ones.

What the Healthy Neighborhoods Program Offers

The Healthy Neighborhoods Program takes a hands-on approach to reducing injuries and illnesses at home. When you sign up, trained staff will visit your home for a free assessment, looking for any risks that might affect you or your family.

During the visit, they'll focus on four key areas: asthma triggers (like dust, mold, and pests), indoor air quality (including ventilation, heating systems, and tobacco smoke), lead risks (such as peeling paint or old fixtures), and injury prevention (by spotting slip, trip, and fall hazards, as well as fire safety problems).

Along with your free home visit, you may also get safety supplies, educational materials, and referrals to local resources. All are designed to help you and your family stay safe and healthy for the long term.

Broome County Health Department In-Home Visit: Proven Local Results

Statewide data from the New York State Department of Health shows it helps people manage asthma, save money, and create healthier homes.

We’re already seeing the impact here in Broome County. From April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, the Healthy Neighborhoods Program helped 132 of your neighbors make their homes safer and healthier.

To help these positive changes last, about 22% of participants had an optional follow-up visit three to six months later. These check-ins allow us to see how things are going in your home, offer extra support, and help you manage asthma if needed.

Emily Polanish, a Public Health Sanitarian, explains that the Healthy Neighborhoods Program helps neighbors like you find hidden health and safety issues and gives you the resources to make your home safer and healthier.
