Watch Out, New York! Intersections Rank Very High for Pedestrian Fatalities
Is it me or are New York intersections becoming more dangerous for pedestrians? It may not be our imagination and we have the proof.
.
According to a study by personal injury law firm Injured in Florida, New York is second in the entire United States for the highest number of pedestrian fatalities at intersections. Are you surprised? I'm not.
The study looked at data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and they focused on fatal crashes that involved pedestrians between 2017 and 2021. In New York, 31% of the over 1,300 pedestrian fatalities occurred at intersections. That's 80% higher than the national average! Yikes!
Only Colorado was higher then the Empire State for having the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians. Out of the 433 fatalities, nearly 32% of them happened at intersections. That's 85.4% higher than the national average. Looks like pedestrians in Colorado need to be extra careful when they cross the street.
Taking the bronze medal in the dangerous walking race is Utah. Nearly 30% of pedestrian fatalities in the Beehive State happened at intersections. Following Utah is Minnesota with 29.3% of its 200 pedestrian fatalities happening at intersections.
Hawaii and Nevada close out the top five states with the most dangerous intersections. In Hawaii, 26.8% of pedestrian fatalities happened at intersections, while in Nevada, that number was 25.5% out of nearly 400 fatalities.
Smaller states like Nebraska and Oregon are also dealing with dangerous intersections. Nebraska has nearly 25% of pedestrian fatalities happened at intersections, while in Oregon, that rate was 24.6% out of 387 total pedestrian fatalities.
New Jersey and Idaho wrap up the top ten list. In New Jersey, about 24.3% of the close to 1,000 pedestrian fatalities occurred at intersections. Idaho had a smaller number of fatalities (under 100), but still a high percentage with over 24% taking place at the intersections.
So, if you're in New York or any of these other states, keep your eyes peeled when crossing those intersections. Safety first, my friends.
