Starting a business used to be something many people did later in life. But new research shows that young adults across the country, including many in New York State, are starting businesses much earlier.

A recent study found that nearly one in four adults between the ages of 18 and 24 already owns a business, making them the most entrepreneurial age group in the United States.

Younger Adults Are Leading the Trend

According to the research, young adults are starting businesses at a higher rate than older generations. Only about 2% of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 are launching businesses.

About 18 percent of people ages 25 to 34 report owning a business, while 16 percent of people ages 35 to 44 do. For people ages 45 to 54, the number drops to about 11 percent.

Many Young People Plan to Start Soon

The study found that about 21 percent of Gen Z adults plan to start a business within the next three years. For many college students and young adults in New York, starting a company is becoming a real option instead of waiting years to begin a career.

Colleges Are Helping Students Launch Companies

Many universities now have programs designed to help students build businesses while they are still in school. These programs often provide mentorship, legal guidance, and tools to help students turn ideas into real companies. Some startup competitions even offer large prizes, with funding opportunities reaching as much as $1.5 million for winning business plans.

What It Could Mean for New York

As more young people explore entrepreneurship, New York State could see more small businesses started by the next generation. Instead of waiting until later in life, many young adults are choosing to begin building companies while they are still in college.
