Many small business owners across New York State say it is getting harder to find workers. A survey of more than 4,000 small business owners found that many believe artificial intelligence, also known as AI, is making the problem worse.

Some Workers Are Avoiding Certain Jobs

Half of New York business owners said hiring has become more difficult because some job seekers are staying away from jobs they think AI could replace someday. Business owners worry that fewer people are entering these careers, making it harder to find workers when they need them.

Big Companies Have an Advantage

Nearly 7 out of 10 business owners said bigger employers make it harder to hire workers. Large companies can offer higher pay, better benefits, and more perks, which can attract job seekers away from small businesses.

Most Small Businesses Are Not Using AI Yet

Even though AI is changing many workplaces, most small businesses have not started using it. The survey found that only 35% are using AI tools. The other 65% are still waiting to see how the technology develops before making a decision.

Many Businesses Are Not Taking Steps to Fix the Problem

Some business owners are trying to solve their hiring problems. About 30% are training current employees to learn new skills. Another 20% are offering better pay or benefits. Only 8% are working with schools and colleges to find future workers. 42% said they have not taken any steps to deal with hiring challenges.

Owners Worry About Young Workers

More than half of the business owners surveyed said they are worried AI could create a "lost generation" of workers. They fear fewer young people will be able to find entry-level jobs and gain the experience they need to build careers.

Some Industries Could Be Hit Hardest

Business owners believe some industries are more likely to be affected by AI than others. Retail, customer service, marketing, education, manufacturing, office jobs, accounting, and healthcare support were among the industries mentioned most often.
