Demolition crews are about to make quick work of knocking down a now-closed Key Bank building to clear the site for a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Johnson City.

The bank in the Oakdale Commons ended operations one month ago because its lease had expired.

Workers from Two Brothers Contracting of Oneida County last week removed asbestos from the roof of the building.

Now, preparation work is underway to knock down the structure that had been used by the bank.

Dave Dimmick of Spark JC - the owners of the Oakdale Commons - said demolition crews will soon remove the building. He told WNBF News that once the structure has been taken down, crews will start up site and pad preparation for the future Chick-fil-A project.

Marc Newman, a Spark JC partner, said the schedule calls for the site to be turned over to the restaurant developer by March 1.

Newman said the building plans for the new Chick-fil-A already have been submitted to the village of Johnson City. He said the developer now must choose a general contractor for the project.

Newman said he expects a construction permit could be granted in February or early March.

Chick-fil-A has not announced a planned opening date for the Johnson City restaurant but Newman is optimistic it will happen before the end of next year.
