State of Emergency Declared in Hancock After Severe Storms; Travel Order in Effect

UPDATE: The state of emergency in the Village of Hancock has been lifted. However, the Town of Hancock remains under a state of emergency until further notice.

The Town and Village of Hancock have both been placed under a state of emergency following severe storm damage that resulted from high winds. These winds caused widespread damage to trees and power infrastructure throughout the area, leading to hazardous conditions.

Supervisor Jerry Vernold and Mayor Shuan Shannon have officially declared states of emergency for both the Town and Village of Hancock. According to a press release from the Delaware County Board of Supervisors, an order restricting all unnecessary travel has been issued and will remain in effect until further notice.

Hancock Travel Restrictions and Safety Updates

Officials emphasize that public safety is the top priority during this emergency. Residents are strongly urged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. The hazardous conditions include fallen trees, downed power lines, and potentially flooded roadways, all of which pose significant risks. The release requests that residents allow first responders, road crews, and utility workers the space and time needed to clear debris, repair power infrastructure, and restore essential services.

Additionally, the Delaware County release warns residents never to drive through flooded roadways and to exercise extreme caution around downed power lines, which may still be energized. In the event of an emergency, individuals are instructed to call 911 for assistance from trained personnel.
