The city of Binghamton is preparing to hire a company to demolish the recently-closed parking garage at State and Henry streets.

The 55-year-old structure was shut down on January 5. Mayor Jared Kraham on Thursday announced the city is accepting bids for the project of removing the 12-level parking ramp.

In a statement issued by City Hall, the mayor said the demolition "will be a major undertaking." He said the city will work with contractors "to ensure the work happens in a safe and timely manner."

The city put out a request for bids this week. Responses are due on February 25.

The city of Binghamton is preparing to hire a company to demolish the recently-closed parking garage at State and Henry streets.

In recent years, the city had spent millions of dollars to repair concrete and other components of the structure to keep it in operation.

Despite those efforts, chunks of concrete continued to fall on parked vehicles as garage employees increased monitoring of the facility.

In late November, the city announced plans to permanently close the parking ramp and demolish the structure.

A surface parking lot is planned for the site after the garage demolition project has been completed.
