WATCH: Rumble Ponies Live Up To Name In Bench-Clearing Brawl
I think the sports world is starting to lose its mind and I'm wondering if they'll get it back anytime soon. We see more and more instances of fans/parents in the stands coming after basketball officials. Google "Basketball official attacked" and see how many videos appear.
It's disgusting and everyone wonders why there aren't any referees available. I'm a basketball official and we normally have around 115 officials for the basketball season. We started with around 65 and we were unable to cover all the games that we normally do.
It's happening in every sport including baseball and one incident involved our very own Binghamton Rumble Ponies. This didn't involve the fans but two baseball players and this makes NO sense to me.
The Ponies were on the road at Portland and here is what happened after one of the Sea Dogs players was hit by a pitch.
Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Portland Sea Dogs Brawl
Here's what doesn't make any sense. Portland is down by 2 runs and the bases are loaded with two outs. Tyreque Reed is hit in the hand by his hip with a slider by Binghamton Rumble Ponies pitcher Marcel Renteria.
Reed starts to head toward first base before he changes his mind. He gets about halfway down the line before charging Renteria. He goes after the pitcher and throws a right-handed punch.
The dugouts cleared, punches are thrown and chaos ensues. After all was said and done, a few of the players required medical attention. Here's why it doesn't make any sports sense.
There is no way that Renteria would intentionally throw at Reed. The Rumble Ponies have a two-lead with two outs and nowhere to put him. Why would you hit a guy that would walk in a run, put the tying run 90 feet away, and the go-ahead run in scoring position? You wouldn't.
Why would you throw a slider toward his hip if you wanted to hit him? You wouldn't. Why would Reed charge Renteria knowing that it would get him thrown out of the game? He shouldn't.
They say that the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Portland Sea Dogs rivalry is back. However, I don't think this is the way to do it. In the long run, no one wins.
