The City of Binghamton is working with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County to administer a program to provide summer jobs to some young people.

The "Citizen U" initiative is aimed at 14- to 18-year-olds who are considered to be "at risk." Youths employed through the program are to identify projects by working with city residents and departments.

According to the city, the projects will be aimed at crime prevention and improving relationships between police and young people.

City Council has approved spending about $10,000 in Community Development Block Grant money to cover the cost of the six-week program.
