Hundreds of people have offered to contribute to a project to place a six-foot-tall Rod Serling statue in Binghamton's Recreation Park.

More than $45,000 was pledged in a recent Kickstarter fundraising campaign for the statue in the West Side neighborhood where Serling grew up.

But Nicholas Parisi, who organized the effort, said the drive ran for 30 days. It raised about half of the $90,000 goal for the project.

Parisi views the amount pledged as "pretty substantial." He said the campaign brought awareness to the idea of having a statue to honor Serling in Rec Park.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Thursday, Parisi said he and other Serling fans aren't giving up on the Serling statue. He said he's confident the statue will eventually become a reality.

Parisi said the Binghamton parks department has been very supportive of the project. He said a spot has been set aside for a Serling statue on the east side of the park, not far from an existing statue of George F. Johnson.
