Why Do Cats Love Cardboard Boxes?

Have you ever noticed that a kitten or cat is quite content with a simple box over an expensive cat bed or elaborate toy?  As the owner of 7 rescue cats, it's something that I've learned to accept, cats are silly, complicated and yet simple animals that love to be unpredictable in their behavior.  Yeah, I have them figured out.  No, I don't think so!

So what's up with their love for a cardboard box?  According to an article from Wired, "cats are ambush predators, and boxes provide great hiding places to stalk prey from (and retreat to)."  Boxes also provide a secure, warm and stress free option when they are looking to relax.  Small confined places where there curl up provides them with the body heat they need.

Cats make wonderful pets as they are pretty self dependent. Show them a little love, provide a good indoor safe location, a healthy eating schedule, along with some boxes or other confined spaces and you will have a close, loyal friend for upwards of 12-15 years if you're lucky.
