Deer season kicks off in the Southern Tier this Saturday (11/16) and if you’re a hunter, you’re being asked to consider helping hungry neighbors this year.

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier and the Venison Donation Program are looking for hunters willing to donate deer meat to be distributed to the less fortunate in our area at no cost to you. Once received, the venison is processed and packaged and picked up by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and distributed to neighbors in need through member agencies like soup kitchens and food pantries.

Legally tagged and properly field dressed deer can be taken to the following places (but you must call ahead):

Broome County Processors
John's Custom Deer Cutting
Binghamton, NY 13901
(607) 648-6577

Terry Shaff
Harpursville, NY 13787
(607) 693-2078

In 2012, 6.580 pounds of venison was donated to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. If one out of every 100 deer is donated, the program could easily reach 100,000 pounds of venison to feed the hungry.
