98.1 The Hawk stands in support of our troops when they return home from serving our country overseas. The men and women who sign up for service do so knowing that they could be sent to war at any time and yet they don't ask for recognition for the risks they take to protect us, but we believe recognition is the least we can offer as a thanks.

In the past few months, we'd have the honor of welcoming home three amazing men who've put their lives on the line to protect our freedom.  The first two men we welcomed home were Ed Holmberg of Port Crane and Tom Rome of Kirkwood of the United States Army. Last week, we were there to cheer for Endicott native Ryan Poklemba who returned home after serving in the United States Navy.

At 11pm Thursday November 14th, 98.1 The Hawk will stand at the Binghamton Airport in support of Michael Cacialli of Vestal who will be returning home after serving the last two years in Japan with the United States Air Force and we'd like to invite you to join us as we thank Michael for his sacrifices.

I come from a military family.  My Dad was in the Army, Grandfather and Uncles Bodie and Scott were in the Air Force and my Uncle Tom is active Air Force. I don’t know what it’s like to be a military member and see what they’ve seen and deal with what they’ve dealt with, but I do understand the military life. The early years of my childhood were spent moving base to base. There were huge chunks of time my Dad wasn’t around. I remember standing at a huge window at the airport watching for his plane to come in and running to him after he walked off the plane. But one of the things I don’t remember is there being a crowd of people around to welcome my Dad back.

Whether a military member has served in a war zone or in a peaceful area overseas, it doesn’t matter to me.  I strongly believe that every returning military member should know that they are loved and appreciated. They should know that their homecoming is a time when political opinions are put aside and a unified front is formed out of respect and admiration for them giving of themselves.
