Jana Kramer is sharing her harrowing story of domestic violence to help other women in the same situation, and she's asked stars including Carrie Underwood to support her and women everywhere by painting a fingernail purple.

Underwood was happy to join the #PutTheNailInIt campaign, and on Instagram, she shared a photo of her left ring fingernail painted purple. Kramer's Dancing With the Stars partner Gleb Savchenko also painted his left ring fingernail purple. Women — and men! — nationwide are beginning to share their photos on Twitter and Instagram.

Other celebrities who've shared photos of their purple ring fingers include musicians Michael Bolton and Dave Navarro. "Fathers and men must be part of the solution," Bolton writes. "I challenge all men to join me in taking Safe Horizon’s #PutTheNailInIt vow to end domestic violence."

Kramer began speaking about her history with domestic violence earlier this month. Her first husband Michael Gambino abused her, first verbally but then physically. At one point in August 2005, he choked her unconscious — Kramer says she prayed to be taken to a happier place.

Gambino would be sentenced to six years in prison for his actions. He'd later commit suicide. “I felt bad because my first feeling was relief that he was gone, that I didn’t have to worry about him anymore,” she tells ABC News. On Instagram, she shares the stats of domestic violence and explains why she got involved in the #PutTheNailInIt campaign.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Kramer and husband Michael Caussin separated in August.
