What’s Open and What’s Closed on Memorial Day?
Memorial Day is Monday, May 29, 2023, and if you're not sure what will be and what won't be open, this handy guide should help!
- 1
United States Post Office
The United States Post Office absolutely doesn't deliver mail on Memorial Day because it's a federal holiday so don't expect to see your mail carrier walking around. If you're expecting a package from FexEx or UPS, don't look for it Memorial Day either because neither company will be delivering.
- 2
Broome County Public Transportation
Hoping to catch a ride on a BC Transit bus on Memorial Day? Sorry, but that's not going to happen because BC Transit will be closed on Memorial Day.
- 4
Government Offices
Every single government office from the federal government to local government, from the office of the Mayor to the County Clerk, will be closed to observe Memorial Day.
- 4
Broome County Public Library
Grab any books you might want to read ahead of time because the Broome County Public Library will not open on Memorial Day.
- 5
Public Schoools
All public schools in both New York and Pennsylvania will be closed on Memorial Day. If you're a parent and didn't realize this, surprise! You and the kiddos will be enjoying a three-day weekend.
- 6
Trash Collection
Check with your trash service to see which day they'll be picking up your garbage. It might be a few days before Memorial Day or the day after, but it won't be on the actual holiday.
- 7
Retail Stores
Most all retail stores will be open on Memorial Day, but they may modify their hours, so before you go, you might want to make a call to be sure where you're headed is open.
- 8
The Stock Market
If you were hoping to do some trading on the stock market on Memorial Day, sorry. It's not going to happen.
- 9
Grocery Stores
Just like retail stores, virtually all grocery stores will be open on Memorial Day, but they too might modify their hours, so it's best to call ahead.
- 12
Liquor Stores
Unless they're state run, all liquor stores will be open on Memorial Day. Bad news if you run out of drinks in Pennsylvania because PA liquor stores are state run.
- 13
Banks
Most all banks are closed on Memorial Day, but their ATMs are always open. Keep in mind that any transactions that you do on Friday will most likely take an extra business day to clear because of the Monday holiday.
