After trying out the elimination of plastic bags at stores in Corning and Ithaca last year, all Wegman’s stores will be plastic-free by January 27 according to signs posted in its stores.

Shoppers can bring their own reusable bags or pay a five-cent fee for paper with that fee going to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

New York State passed the ban on plastic shopping bags last year, citing concerns over the environment.

Wegman’s said it had done studies of it’s customers’ habits and found 95% of shoppers already had reusable bags, using them at least occasionally.

Customers of the Rochester-based supermarket chain have a little over two weeks now to get used to bringing bags with them into the stores while other shoppers still have until March to get into the habit.
