If you got some gift cards for Christmas, you might want to use them this weekend before the big (possible) storm hits the Southern Tier. The reason you should use your Christmas gift cards this weekend is that if you don't use them now you might not ever use them...and not because you forgot they were in your purse/wallet.

Anyone who has ever had extra spending money in their wallet will tell you how hard it is to hold on to their moola. It seems to vanish and we end up shaking our heads, mumbling to ourselves and wondering where it all went. 25 bucks at the mini-mart on brownies, coffee, and potato chips? Wow, that went fast.

It's a nice surprise to clean out your sock drawer and find a gift card that you forgot that you had. It is not a fun surprise to forget about a gift card, find it and then realize that you can't use the card because the store closed or the card lost value.

The reason that you should use your Christmas gift cards this weekend is that the longer you hold on to them the more likely you are to forget about them. In fact, I found a coupon from 2016 for a restaurant that has changed its owner and its name. WHOOPS!

National Use Your Gift Card Day

Another reason you should use the cards this weekend is that Saturday is National Use Your Gift Card Day. Last summer, there was a survey that said over half of us have unused gift cards with around $100 on it on average.

If you got more gift cards for Christmas, you might have a couple of hundred dollars in gift cards and if you don't use them that would stink because someone spent the time and money to get them for you and the only person to benefit will be the store.
