Tioga County Residents Must Hire Hauler for Recycling Pickup

The cost of curbside recycling is being shifted in Tioga County and the change means thousands of residents now need to choose a hauler to handle the task.

The county legislature in October decided against awarding a bid for the recycling job for next year because of soaring costs.

Officials said passing on the added expense would have resulted in the county exceeding the state's tax increase cap.

The recycling levy no longer will appear on county tax bills. Starting next month, private companies will collect recycling and bill for the service.

Tioga County sustainability managed Ellen Pratt said residents still are required to recycle. They must make arrangements with a hauler to collect recyclables starting January 1.
