Tioga County now has eight times as many active coronavirus cases as it did one week ago.

In an update released Wednesday night, county officials announced another COVID-19 death. They did not say when or where the death occurred. 25 other coronavirus deaths had previously been confirmed in Tioga County.

The new report said there were 40 active cases in the county. That's up from the five active cases reported seven days earlier.

The county now has 246 people in mandatory quarantine, compared to 97 a week ago.

Officials said the significant spike in Tioga County is due to "community spread, not one specific area but in bars, salons, offices, everywhere."

Residents are urged to wear a mask and social distance. Those who feel ill are urged to stay home and away from other people.
