Some of my best childhood friends attended and graduated from the College of Saint Rose. As an adult, the children of more friends attended the college. When the son of one of my friends recently passed away at the school following a medical emergency, the school community wrapped her in love and showed concern and compassion as she struggled to navigate through the darkest time in her life.

After a long-standing history of providing outstanding education and a solid foundation, the College of Saint Rose in Upstate New York is facing closure in the spring of 2024 due to significant financial difficulties.

The College of Saint Rose, renowned for its higher education programs in Upstate New York, is reportedly set to close its doors by the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. The decision, resulting from ongoing financial challenges, was unveiled after a closed-door meeting of the College's Board of Trustees. Although the college has not officially confirmed the reports, sources suggest that the closure has been approved.

Since its establishment in 1920, the College of Saint Rose has played a huge role in the academic community of Upstate New York, offering quality education and enriching the cultural landscape of the Capital Region. The closure of this college is expected to have a significant impact as students, faculty, and community members are left with many questions about their academic futures.

With declining enrollment, thanks in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic, the college has faced ongoing financial hardships and accreditation concerns. The decrease in tuition revenue, which forms the majority of the college's budget, has further added to challenges.

The closure of the College of Saint Rose will not only affect the academic landscape but also have economic implications, as it supports over 1,000 jobs and owns numerous properties in Albany. These ripple effects will be felt in the surrounding community.

Acknowledging the personal impact of this decision, the Capital Region Delegation has expressed its commitment to ensuring a seamless transition for the Saint Rose community. They recognize the importance of seeking partner institutions to continue the college's flagship academic programs, including education, nursing, forensic psychology, and criminal justice.

All efforts will be made at the federal, state, and local levels, as well as in the private sector, to help lessen the impact of the closure. The delegation wants to make sure there's a solid plan in place for what will happen to the students, faculty, and the college's physical presence in Albany.
