Report: Former Binghamton Mets Players May Face Charges

Two men who played for the Binghamton Mets reportedly have been linked to a drug trafficking ring in the Dominican Republic.

The New York Post Tuesday reported former New York Mets players Octavio Dotel and Luis Castillo were arrested in their native country. The paper later revised its story, suggesting Castillo had not been taken into custody.

Media reports had indicated Dotel and Castillo were among several people named as suspects in an investigation targeting organized crime.

The updated story by the Post reported attorneys for Castillo strongly denied any wrongdoing on the part of their client. They questioned whether the authorities had the right Luis Castillo.

An attorney for Castillo issued a statement saying the former player had not been arrested or indicted. The attorney said Castillo now lives in Florida and had not recently visited his home country.

Dotel pitched for the Binghamton Mets in 1997 and 1998. He made his major league debut with the New York Mets in June 1999. Dotel also played for a dozen other major league teams.

Castillo was a second baseman who pitched for the Florida Marlins in his first major league game in 1996. He later went on to play for the New York Mets. He played five games for the Binghamton Mets in a rehab assignment during the 2008 season.
