Each and every December the Twin Tiers Honor Flight makes a point to participate in Wreaths Across America to remember our fallen veterans. On Saturday, December 14, 2019, the Twin Tiers Honor Flight will be laying wreaths on the graves of local veterans at the Chenango Valley Cemetery in Binghamton through the Wreaths Across America program.

The incredible story of Wreaths Across America dates back to 1992 when a man named Morrill Worcester found that his wreath company was left with tons of extra wreaths as the holiday season began to wind down. Worcester wasn't sure what to do with all of the wreaths but he remembered a trip he'd taken to Arlington National Cemetery when he was just a young boy and of the impact that trip had on his life. At that moment, Worcester knew what he would do with his extra wreaths- they would be laid on the graves of veterans, as a nod to their service to our country.

What started as a simple idea has grown into a national event involving wreath companies and volunteers from all around the country. Today, wreath-laying events take place at cemeteries in all 50 states through Wreaths Across America. This year, over a million wreaths will be laid on the graves of our treasured veterans, young and old.

The Twin Tiers Honor Flight is not only committed to honoring veterans right here in the Twin Tiers, but also to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms, and how incredibly important it is to take time to honor those who sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms.

If you've been looking for a way that you can teach your kids about honoring the memory of our brave men and women, Wreaths Across America is a wonderful way to do that. As a matter of fact, when a (provided) wreath is laid on the grave of a veteran, you and your kids are encouraged to speak the name of the veteran aloud, thank them for their service, and take a moment to reflect on that person’s life.

The Twin Tiers Honor Flight invites you to join them as they lay wreaths at the Chenango Valley Cemetery (120 Nowlan Rd, Binghamton, NY 13901) on Saturday, December 14th. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a short ceremony, so please make sure to give yourself enough time to find a place to park and get situated before the ceremony begins.

Wreaths Across America will hold wreath-laying ceremonies all over the United States on Saturday, December 14, so chances are excellent there will be a ceremony near you, wherever you are, that you can participate in.
