Lead Poisoning Prevention week is October 26th through October 30th, and the public should be aware of the dangers of this environmental threat, especially for children throughout New York State.

The biggest concern involving childhood lead poisoning is lead paint that peels or flakes off, and settles on floors toys and other areas.

Children can breathe in the dust or swallow it without anyone ever knowing it.

It only takes a small amount of lead to hard a young child and the effects can be permanent.

New York State requires lead testing for all children ages one and two, it is the best way to make sure your child is safe.

According to a press release from the Broome County Health Department, in 2019 fifty six children tested showed elevated levels of lead in their blood, unfortunately because of poor testing procedures only half of children between ages one and two were tested.

Broome County Health Department provides education and support for parents of children.

The Broome County Health Department recommends talking steps to protect children from lead in their homes and surroundings.

This includes Keeping paint on surfaces in good condition, and keeping babies and children away from peeling and chipping paint.
