Now that the new design for New York State license plates has been announced, Senator Fred Akshar says he wants to make sure replacement fees aren’t higher than the cost of actually making the new plates.

The Binghamton Republican has proposed legislation setting license plate fees at or below the actual cost of production and prevents additional fees for drivers to keep their same license plate number.

Akshar says the proposal also requires the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to put out an annual report detailing the cost of making New York’s license plates.

Last month, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced old license plates, many of which have become unreadable, and defective plates that are peeling would have to be replaced.  Defective plates are being replace free of charge, but the proposed replacement of old plates would cost drivers $25 with another $20 fee to keep their current license plate number.

Senator Akshar says an on-going survey of his constituents shows well over 90% opposed to the new fees.  The Senator is still taking comments at Akshar.nysenate.gov.
