Police: Gun-Wielding Man Shot by State Trooper in Newark Valley

Authorities say a man was shot by a state trooper in Tioga County after he allegedly pointed a shotgun at police.

According to New York State Police, the incident happened late Friday afternoon at a residence on Chamberlain Road in the town of Newark Valley.

Investigators say troopers, Tioga County sheriff's deputies and a Department of Environmental Conservation officer were sent to the home around 4 p.m.

Police received a report of a domestic dispute. A man was said to have fired at least one shot before officers arrived.

Officials say the man ignored police orders to drop a shotgun. The man then allegedly approached officers while pointing the weapon toward them. He was shot by a state trooper.

The injured man was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he had been listed in serious condition.

State police did not release the names of the man who was wounded or the trooper who shot him.
