A man who was said to have been armed with a knife died shortly after he was shot by an Oneonta police officer.

According to The Daily Star of Oneonta, the 23-year-old man was wounded in front of his River Street home.

Authorities said police had been called shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a "domestic incident."

The newspaper reported the man allegedly attacked a woman who was with her young child. The woman was said to have sustained a leg wound. Her condition and the condition of the child were not immediately known.

According to The Daily Star, Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig indicated two shots had been fired by police in the incident.

The injured man was taken to Fox Hospital in Oneonta. He then was transferred to Albany Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

New York State Police are investigating the shooting.
