Police Say What Was Found in This Pennsylvania Basement Is Beyond Reprehensible

There are moments when a story goes beyond shocking and lands somewhere much heavier. Police have arrested a Lancaster County man after discovering human remains inside the basement of his Ephrata home. What’s been described by investigators is reprehensible.

As a former resident of Lancaster County and a one-time proud resident of the lovely state of Pennsylvania, I’ll say this plainly: I reject this, I abhor it. This is not something anyone can or should accept.

Disturbing Details Revealed by Prosecutors

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said investigators discovered more than 100 distinct human remains inside the basement of 34-year-old Jonathan Gerlach. Those remains were found in various states of decay, ranging from skeletal remains believed to be more than 200 years old to infants believed to be only months old. According to officials, some remains were hanging, others were pieced together, and several skulls were reportedly displayed on a shelf.

A Case That Stunned Even Seasoned Officers

Yeadon Police Chief Henry Giammarco Jr. called the case “probably the most horrific thing” he has seen in his entire law enforcement career. That statement alone speaks volumes about the severity of what investigators encountered. Officials emphasized that there is currently no clear motive, but the scope and condition of the remains suggest a long-running pattern rather than an isolated incident.

Cemetery Break-Ins Sparked the Investigation

Authorities believe the remains are connected to dozens of grave robberies at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, just outside Philadelphia. Yeadon Mayor Rohan Hepkins said the investigation began after members of the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery group alerted him to repeated mausoleum break-ins. That tip prompted increased patrols in the area, eventually leading police to identify Gerlach as a suspect.

Arrest at the Cemetery Raises Alarming Questions

According to court documents, Gerlach was arrested on January 6 as he exited Mount Moriah Cemetery. Police say he was carrying a burlap bag that contained human remains, including the mummified remains of two small children, three skulls, and additional bones. That discovery led investigators to obtain and execute a search warrant at Gerlach’s Ephrata home.

An Unprecedented Discovery Inside the Home

During the search of the residence, police reportedly found more than 100 human skulls, two decomposing human torsos, and numerous other remains inside the basement. The sheer volume and condition of what was found has left many shaken.

Hundreds of Charges Filed

Gerlach now faces 574 charges, including burglary, abuse of corpse, and criminal trespassing. He is currently being held in Delaware County Prison and is awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for January 20.
