Binghamton Joins the Fight Against Suicide With Out of the Darkness Walk
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., but it doesn’t have to be. All over the country, people are coming together to spread awareness and push for prevention. Here in Broome County, neighbors are lacing up their sneakers to take part in a walk that’s all about hope and support.
Out of the Darkness in Broome County
Mark your calendar for this Sunday, October 5th, 2025, at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. That’s when the annual Broome County Out of the Darkness Community Walk takes place.
It’s hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Greater Central NY Chapter and brings together everyone that wants to remember loved ones and to support each other..

When and Where
Check-in starts at 9:00 a.m., and the walk gets going at 10:30 a.m. at Otsiningo Park. Whether you’ve been walking for years or you’re brand new, everyone is welcome to join in.
Why It Matters
Money raised from the walk goes to AFSP’s programs that provide education, resources, and support. Their big goal? Cutting the national suicide rate by 20 percent by the end of the year. “Suicide touches one in five American families,” said Kerr Flanders, AFSP Area Director. “Our ultimate goal is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.”
Part of Something Bigger
The Broome County event is one of over 550 Out of the Darkness walks happening across the country this year. They bring out hundreds of thousands of walkers and raise millions of dollars to support prevention. Last year, these walks raised more than $21 million.
Turning Hope Into Action
“These walks are about turning hope into action,” said AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia. “The research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we keep up the fight, the science is only going to get better.” With help from volunteers, local communities, and national leaders, the push to reduce suicide is stronger than ever.
How You Can Help
Local sponsors are stepping up, but the biggest impact comes from everyday people showing up. You can register, donate, or simply walk alongside others to show that no one has to face this alone.
