So how do you sleep? Do you toss and turn, lay on your back or on your side? You probably don't sleep the way that you think. Don't believe me? Ask the person that shares your sleeping space.

May is Better Sleep Month and to figure out how we sleep, Next Day Mattress did a survey of New Yorkers. They wanted to find out about our sleeping habits, and what they found was interesting.

Average Sleep Time

During the week, New Yorkers would get about 5.90 hours of sleep per night on average. On weekends, it went up to around 6.39 hours per night. It looks like for most of us, 6 hours is the magic number, followed by 8 hours and 7 hours during the week and on the weekends.

Bedtime Routines

According to the survey, a lot of New Yorkers don't have a set time that they go to bed during the work week. However those that do, it looks like 11 p.m. is the most popular time.  Weekends were pretty random as well, with 11 p.m. and 12 p.m. being the most popular times.

Wake-ups

People reported waking up almost 3 (2.82) times every night and would stay awake any where from  5 to 20 minutes. Room temperature, being thirsty, and worrying about the next day's work were the main reasons for people waking up and staying up.

Pre-Bedtime Activities

Besides sleeping, we use our beds for all sorts of things with watching movies or getting cozy being the top choices.

Bedtime Habits

Many New Yorkers confessed to being on their phones within an hour before hitting the hay, which doesn't help when you just want to shut your eyes. Turn off the electronics to help turn off your mind.
